Everything you need to know about dogs!

How long can I live?

I have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years if if you take good care of me every day.

What size am I?

Dogs come in different sizes. It depends on the breed (type).

What colour am I?

I come in different colours since there are many breeds (types) of dogs.

What's my personality like??

Dogs' personalities vary. You will have to spend some
one-on-one time with a dog to check out his 'dogitude'! You should also learn about the different breeds of dogs to find out more about them.

It’s important to clean up after your dog! Poop left in parks or on sidewalks is not only unsightly, but can transmit disease. And it’s not much fun to step in either!

What do dogs need to be healthy and happy?

I need healthy food. I should be fed twice a day (breakfast & dinner). I need dry food (kibble) and wet food (soft). If I am a puppy, I need a special puppy food until I am an adult. Please keep my dishes clean,
too!
Always make sure that I have plenty of fresh water.
If I am an outdoor dog, I need an insulated doghouse for protection from the weather.
I need to wear a leash and collar to keep me safe and under your protection. I need an identification tag on my collar. I need a City of Ottawa licence tag every year. I also needs a microchip.
I need to be brushed once a week. It keeps my fur healthy and feels good, too! And don't forget to trim my nails so they don't get too long.
I need to be walked two to three times a day for exercise so I stay in tip-top shape. If I become overweight, I can have health problems. Exercise can also keep me from being bored and developing behaviour problems, like chewing.
Always clean up after me — it's the law!
I need a yearly check-up and vaccinations (shots) at the veterinarian (animal doctor) to keep me healthy. If I am a female, I should also be spayed. If I am a male, I should be neutered. This will stop me from breeding and reproducing.
I am a social animal and I need lots of attention and love.
